         In memory of Sgt. Lefter

Hq. & Hq. Co. 2nd  Armored Division

Mess sergeants have a lot of things to occupy their thought,

But, the one that finished him hadn’t seemed sought.

We often copied ‘funny’ by a homemade kind of pun:

“If I’m over here next Christmas, Gives it this with my gun,”

And we would point a finger, then, to target our own head,

In a playful imitation of an act of loosening lead.

The Sergeant at a game of cards, did twist his fated lot,

He pointed his handgun at his head – at a highly lethal spot:

“If I’m over here next Christmas…,”

          then an unexpected sound

Brought a surging silence –  softly – floating limb to limb,

The sentence wasn’t finished, but the unremembered round

Had punched into his memory  – and had ended it for him.
